Social Justice
The Social Justice Team was created as a part of the Boulder FUMC re-visioning process. The team is newly organizing and working to design a process to identify issues of pertinent interest to the church and how FUMC can be involved. It works in coordination with the Reconciling Ministries and the Outreach Committee.
GROUP: JUSTICE ACTIVISTS OF FUMC
Working Together for the Common Good
Our congregation has also long been known for its commitment to God’s justice for all people. In addition to our many study opportunities related to justice issues and being a Reconciling Congregation open to all, many of our members and friends are active as individuals for social justice in their daily lives.
Now, we are creating the opportunity of acting together with others in a group—networked with many other groups—to work for a more compassionate, just world.
Our group will be grounded in our United Methodist Christian faith and its Social Principles. We will engage in a variety of acts of charity and justice. We will help the Least, the Last and the Lost who cannot help themselves; advocate for the Common Good; and—like the Old Testament prophets and Jesus and Muhammad—prophetically oppose abuses of power and wealth. This non-partisan, progressive group will draw on their fellowship for mutual support during times controversial witness and their in-depth study of issues as a solid foundation for their common action.
We will network with many other justice groups, in order to have a more effective, powerful witness:
- In our own Christian denomination
- Ecumenically among other Christians
- Interfaith—with groups in other religions
- Ecological groups—for a sustainable planet
- Humanists with similar progressive values
A number of different kinds of justice actions will be ongoing. Everyone in our group will not be able to participate in every action. Some will act, while others will simply list their support. We are also aware that there will be times when some in the group will disagree with a particular action. In those cases, they will be able to withdraw their names from the supporters list of the Justice Activists of FUMC group for that particular action.
Note: We will have a kick-off meeting on Monday, April 20, 7:00 pm in the Parlor. Imam Ibrahim Kazerooni will be with us to discuss the importance of these religious groups and the possibilities of networking with similar Muslim groups.
Other Current team activities:
Works with Adult Forum to educate the church and others on issues such as environmental sustainability, global AIDS, hunger and other issues. Works on communicating to the church the Social Principles of The United Methodist Church.
